      Crystallins must exist for a long time in high concentration. These may have evolved from stressor proteins, then to beta crystallins, then to gamma crystallins, which were eye specific, perhaps originally in the retina and finally in the lens (Wistow et al. ). The results so far suggest that GSH plays a critical role in ocular development, and further studies are underway to identify molecular details involved in this process.
